Lesson Curriculum:
Stage 1
“The Art of the Basics”
Lesson 1 – “Your guitar has a name” – students will learn the orientation of their instruments and
becoming familiar with how they work and sound. They will also
learn tricks on how to keep their guitar in top shape, in tune, and
sounding amazing.
Lesson 2 – “My Fingers Hurt!” –
students will learn how to read a chord chart and use finger
formations to form chords. They will also learn how to use a pick
and attain a very good view on how the guitar works.
Lesson 3 – “The three chords of power” – students will learn to play the three basic chords, their
function, and how they can be used together to form songs.
They will also learn some basic song and note theory and how to
stay in the same key.
Lesson 4 – “Incorporating the craziness”
– we will review and incorporate the last three lessons,
allowing students to progress to the next stage.

Stage 2
“4 Ways to Not Annoy Your Parents”
Lesson 1 – “The five chords that rock your world”
– students will learn to play all five of the basic major
guitar chords and how they form the majority of the music
that they might listen to on a regular basis. We will also
incorporate a basic strum pattern that will allow students to play
the chords together, switching from chord to chord.
Lesson 2 – “Arpeggiation Station”
– students will learn to use the 5 major chords to form their
own combinations by varying the way they switch from chord to chord.
Lesson 3 – “Fight for your Right to strum”
– students will learn basic strum patterns to incorporate into the
chords they learn, they will be encouraged to make their own
creative combinations.
Lesson 4 – “Play your heart Out” –
we will review and incorporate the last three lessons,
including strum patterns and song structure.

Stage 3
The Sound of Music”
Lesson 1 – “Remove your ear plugs” -
students will learn their first song, using all the skills they have
learned to this point.
Lesson 2 – “Familiar Territory”
– students will build on the song that they learn, and learn
to use those skills for songs they will learn in the future.
Lesson 3 – “I’m kind of a big deal”
– students will learn how to play the same chord structures
in different places and keys of the guitar. They will also learn to
notice the different chords and keys in their favorite songs.
Lesson 4 – “This is how we Rock”
– students will review and master the song for this stage,
ready to play for anyone they know with confidence.

Stage 4
“Feel the Rhythm!”
Lesson 1 – “Strum is your invisible Rhythm”
– students will learn more complex strum patterns, how to
make their own strum patterns, and feel the beat of the songs
they would love to play.
Lesson 2 – “What time is it?”
– students will learn the different time signatures of songs and
how to use them to their advantage when learning to play their own songs.
Lesson 3 – “Attempting the impossible”
– students will learn to incorporate different rhythms into their
songs and strumming patterns, making it easier to keep time signatures.
Lesson 4 – “Can I get a strum strum?”
– students will learn to incorporate all they have learned
this far, chords, strumming, structure, time, and rhythm to play
music that sounds better than Ricky Martin.

Stage 5
“I know that song!”
Lesson 1 – “Without Elvis, none of us could make it – Buddy Holly”
– students will start to learn to teach themselves how to
play songs they love and hear using “play by
ear” techniques.
Lesson 2 – “rhythm, bass, lead, and melody” – students will learn to pick out different parts of
songs and familiarize themselves with each of them. They will
also learn to use what they have learned to play what they hear.
Lesson 3 – “Keepin’ Tabs”
– students will get a basic introduction to guitar tablature
and how to read the sheet music to enable them to learn more
complex songs.
Lesson 4 – “My rock is bigger now”
– students will learn their third song incorporating what they
have learned this far. There will also be a review over what
they have learned.

Stage 6
“True Guitar Hero”
Lesson 1 – “A pick is not for your nose”
– students will learn to finger pick their chords and arpeggiate
to different rhythms.
Lesson 2 – “Pick your destiny”
– students will learn to finger pick and use a variety of
techniques suited to the kind of music they want to play.
Lesson 3 – “Behind Bars…. Not that kind”
– students will learn different bar chord forms of
the chords they have learned in previous stages and how to
tell the difference.
Lesson 4 – “I have a fever, and the only cure is more MUSIC”
– overall review and evaluation of the beginner
stages and incorporating it into a final beginner song.
